Home Office 2000 is for the typical computer user, whether for personal or professional use. While it may not have the highly advanced features of the more expensive office suites, most users – even power users – don’t even know how to use those features.

Home Office 2000 has a fairly robust, integrated office package that is compatible with all of the major office suites. The 2000 version is a bit dated, however, using somewhat older compatible file formats (MS Word 6, for example). This means that there will be few issues when porting files from Home Office 2000 to another suite. There may be some difficulty, however, opening files generated by newer professional applications depending on the complexity of the file.

The office suite – word processor, spreadsheet, and database – allows information to be ported from one Home Office application to another (e.g. embed spreadsheets into your documents). The integration is fairly seamless, with glitches occurring only a little more than they would occur with the highly priced competitive products.

Aside from the standard office package it also bundles additional proxy server, web hosting, fax/phone, and other useful software together. It’s highly doubtful that the target market would use the rest of the software bundled in this package. Still, it’s all useful software, if a bit dated.

Installation was fairly painless on most Microsoft operating systems, assuming you use the default settings. If you don’t use the default setting, it may create some difficulties – especially when installing on WinNT.

The package is not resource intensive. It can run on older machines (Pentium 75 recommended), and doesn’t take much space on the hard drive (perhaps 100-150 MB for the office software).

This is an excellent general office suite that delivers a good capability for an extremely low price. This is a very useful package that’s well worth the cost.

I bought this product a little over a year ago at an office supply chain. As far as the program itself, I was quite happy. Until tonight. Suddenly, a window popped up when I tried to access the word processor, telling me that in order to continue using the product I would have to buy a *full version*. Nowhere in the packaging or literature is it indicated that this is a trial version program (although the price here on Amazon[.com] is certainly a clue). Now I have a worthless program that I can’t access with over a year’s work on it. Save yourself some headache down the road, buy a *real* office suite bundle.

I agree 100% with the previous reviewers in the fact that OpenOffice, Firefox, and the other main packages are rich in features and of a very good quality. Even if Microsoft stuff would be free of charge, I’d prefer these packages 10 to 1 over Microsoft, precisely because of quality.
Now, the main point I want to make is, that if you have more than one computer, let’s say three as I have at home, savings will add up very quickly. For example, just talking about MS Office: each license for each computer is 0+. To be perfectly legal you should buy 3 licenses x 0 = ,200 (or more). With Open Office you won’t spend more for one, than you’ll spend for 3, or 20, because it’s open source. Under the General Public License, you could install it on an unlimited number of computers, and remain perfectly legal. So, the only Microsoft product my wife and daughter are running on their respective computers, due to compatibility issues with the local school district, is Windows 98SE, but everything else is open source, including Open Office, Firefox, and Thunderbird. Of course, all machines are dual boot with Linux Open Suse 10.0, which in my case is the one that I use almost exclusively.
BTW, just if you’re considering getting rid of Microsoft products altogether, you can get Linspire 5.0, Suse 10.0, or any other major Linux distro, and you’ll be amazed that all of these applications and much, much more, come included. You’ll be a happy camper in a world of freedom!

Open Office reads and writes in MS Office 97/2000/XP formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint and can export documents to PDF format.
One of the best advantages is inexpensive upgradability. I purchased Office 95 (0+ dollars) in 1996. When Office 97 came out, my Office 95 software would not open office 97 formatted documents. I toughed it out till I purchased Office 2000 (0+ dollars) now Office XP and 2003 have came out (do we see a pattern here)? I suspect that it will be much less expensive to buy a upgrade to Open Office to read and write documents created by upcoming versions of Micro$oft Office.

ENCARTA: In college, I can’t use an encyclopedia as a source on a paper. However, I can look things up with the encyclopedia, so I have some clue about the topic and can determine where I should look to future research the topic.

MONEY: This is really good for keeping track of all of my bills (tuition, books, car payments, insurance, credit cards, etc.) This program takes a little bit to get used to and you have to keep using it to see how effective it is, but it helps make managing money a little bit easier.

PICTURE IT! PHOTO: I have a program that came with my scanner that does a pretty good job. When I want to add the ‘little extras’ to graphics, I use this program. I can create effects with this program.

I installed this suite on an IBM with a stripped hardrive and only Pro 2000 operating system present . I could not have been happier. Word provides much more versatility than the Works word processor and is wonderfully integrated as a companion to task launcher and enhanced spreadsheet capability. Digital photography is fun with Picture It! however I ended up using Pixela from Sony most of the time as a more convenient application for my camera. Encarta is always first class and Money took a long time to update my records for the year from scratch…but was easy,accurate and intuitive to use. I just bought a new computer with Home Edition XP and am terrified to install this suite which duplicates many areas of XP…but I really miss using Word and will tough it out with some of the problems others have experienced. This is a great product!

I loaded Word 2002 only. It caused the processor to run at 100% all the time that word was active. It would take 30 to 120 seconds to type one character then another or to click on a tool bar item and have it open. All service packs were installed, and didn’t cure the problem. When I deleted Works from My computer it caused all WMF files to show up in oriental letters. This program like most Microsoft software it is over priced, buggy and a waste of money. LONG LIVE WORD PERFECT! My computer is running Win. 2000 PRO, service pack 3, 512meg of memory and an AMD 750 Processor. Also jpg. wmf, gif files would no longer work with thumbnail views.
